NBSS Scoring – What the Numbers Mean
NBSS uses a 0–5 scale to reflect beer quality on the day you visit:
0 – No cask beer available
Cask beer is normally sold, but none is available at the time of your visit.
1 – Poor
Beer is seriously flawed and undrinkable.
2 – Average
Drinkable, but with noticeable faults or lacking condition.
3 – Good
Enjoyable, well-kept, and worth returning for.
4 – Very Good
Excellent condition and flavour; a standout pint.
5 – Perfect
Outstanding in every way — a benchmark beer.
Important:
Scores should reflect quality, not personal taste. A beer style you wouldn’t normally choose can still score highly if it is well-kept.
